Modeling Post-Sunset Equatorial Spread-F Occurrence as a Function of Evening Upward Plasma Drift Using Logistic Regression, Deduced from Ionosondes in Southeast Asia

چکیده

The occurrence of post-sunset equatorial spread-F (ESF) could have detrimental effects on trans-ionospheric radio wave propagation used in modern communications systems. This problem calls for a simple but robust model that accurately predicts the ESF. Logistic regression was implemented to daily ESF as function evening upward plasma drift (v). use logistic is formalized by y^=1/[1+exp(−z)], where y^ represents probability occurrence, and z linear containing v. value v derived from vertical motion bottom side F-region ionosphere, which observed ionosondes Southeast Asia. Data points (938) were collected equinox seasons 2003 2016. training set 70% dataset derive remaining 30% test performance y^. expression z=−2.25+0.14v obtained set, y^≥0.5 (v ≥ ~16.1 m/s) y^<0.5 < represented non-occurrence ESF, respectively, with an accuracy ~0.8 true skill score (TSS) ~0.6. Similarly, testing shows TSS Further analysis suggested z-function can be reliable F10.7 levels ranging 60 140 solar flux units. (y^) found this study novel technique predict occurrence. consistency between concludes values proposed mathematical nowcasting or ESFs.

Unseasonal development of post-sunset F-region irregularities over Southeast Asia on 28 July 2014: 1. Forcing from above?

This contribution is the first of a two-part investigation into an unseasonal post-sunset equatorial F-region irregularity (EFI) event over the Southeast Asian region on the evening of 28 July 2014. Ground-based GPS scintillation data, space-based GPS radio occultation (RO) data, and ionosonde data show the existence of EFIs shortly after sunset over a region spanning 30° in longitude and 40° i...

A Review of Equatorial Spread F

Equatorial spread F is a spectacular phenomenon in which the equatorial region ionosphere is reshaped after sunset. The plasma instabilities responsible for equatorial spread F are fascinating since they occur on time scales ranging from seconds to hours and length scales from centimeters to tens of kilometers. The plasma irregularities that occur in the F region also influence the performance ...

The correlation of longitudinal/seasonal variations of evening equatorial pre-reversal drift and of plasma bubbles

The evening pre-reversal vertical drift velocity enhancement (PRE) constitutes an important seeding mechanism for the generation of F region irregularities. Ion density and drift measurements from ROCSAT-1 and DMSP satellites are used to examine the correlation of longitudinal/seasonal (l/s) variations in the evening pre-reversal vertical drift velocity at the magnetic equator in the topside io...

Relation of zonal plasma drift and wind in the equatorial F region as derived from CHAMP observations

In this paper we estimate zonal plasma drift in the equatorial ionospheric F region without counting on ion drift meters. From June 2001 to June 2004 zonal plasma drift velocity is estimated from electron, neutral, and magnetic field observations of Challenging Mini-satellite Payload (CHAMP) in the 09:00–20:00 LT sector. The estimated velocities are validated against ion drift measurements by t...
